I.  Leif Ericson

Christopher Columbus is generally believed to be the first European to have made contact with people native to the Americas.  Some historians claim that Leif Ericson led the first European expedition to the North American mainland in about the year 1002.  Since no maps of his expedition exist, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly where Ericson landed on his voyage.  Some evidence indicates that Ericson landed in northern Newfoundland; others claim that he sailed even farther south to the Cape Cod region of present-day Massachusetts.
